I know I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is just my least favorite part of the year. There really is no other way to put it and I’ve also said given a choice I would go into hibernation the day before Halloween and wake up on New Year’s Day if I could.
About the only thing I can say about where I am in life is that time goes much faster and so this dreaded period of the year flies by a little more quickly than it did in the past.
Part of the reason I’m not all that crazy about this time of year is because of things I don’t have. The people who aren’t around anymore. My relatives have kids and grandkids now so they spend time with them which is as it should be but there was a time when we were all together and holidays were held at my Uncle and my Aunt’s house and they were just glorious.
There was an incredible spread of food but that was only part of it because there were other things like the card games that were so much fun too. There was graduating from the small kids table in the kitchen to the adult table as well. I mean given the upbringing that I had, these moments were the highpoint of those years because they were the times where I felt I had family which wasn’t something I felt most of the time.
If I didn’t turn out bad I’ve said it was because of my Mom, my Grandparents and my Uncle. My Uncle was a giant, really. He didn’t engage in the card games or anything of the sort he just spent the day playing host and making sure the food was prepared and things came out when they should. He spent a lot of those holidays in the kitchen if you can believe it.
But he really had a way with kids and he had a way of making you feel very, very special.
This year, I actually have someplace to go for Thanksgiving which is always a bit of a toss up meaning I just don’t know if I will get an invite or not. On one level, it’s okay if I don’t but it’s always nice to be thought of and included.
Getting back to Thanksgiving though… I wanted to touch on the holiday but I also wanted to use it as an excuse to post this little bit. It’s from a sitcom that aired back in 1978 which means it’s almost a HALF A CENTURY OLD!!!! My god!
Anyway, this should get you in the Thanksgiving spirit so to speak if you’ve never seen it.
